Derek Smith's goal two minutes and 55 seconds into overtime gave the top-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats a 5-4 victory over the Harvard Crimson in the annual Rivalry on Ice game at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening.

The Bobcats seized the early advantage, scoring three goals in 36 seconds in the opening period. Alex Miner-Barron got the visitors on the board before K.J. Tiefenwerth and Sam Anas extended Quinnipiac's advantage to 3-0. A fourth goal by Travis St. Denis capped a frantic opening period for the No. 1 team in the nation.

Alexander Kerfoot got Harvard on the board midway through the second period, and Tyler Moy collected a power play goal off an assist from Desmond Bergin to halve the deficit. Ryan Donato cut the lead to one with a strike at the 17:43 mark before Colin Blackwell completed the comeback 10 minutes into the third.

With the score tied at 4-4, the game went to overtime, but it was Smith who sent the Bobcats home victorious when he scored off an assist from Tim Clifton and Scott Davidson.

Following the conclusion of the Quinnipiac-Harvard contest, Navy beat Army, 6-4, in a club exhibition match.

My first game of 2016 was some NCAA hoops as No. 10 Xavier came into Queens to face St. John's. The Red Storm cut Xavier's 12-point lead to as little as one point late in the second half, but the Musketeers pulled away for a 74-66 victory. 

St. John's guard Federico Mussini went 5-for-8 from downtown as part of a 19-point night and teammate Ron Mvouika added 19 points and five rebounds in the loss. 

Xavier's Myles Davis scored a team-high 19 points with four assists and three boards, while Trevon Bluiett recorded 18 points, four assists and three steals in the victory.

Construction continues on the grounds of the US Open tennis championships in Flushing Meadows, Queens, in New York. The roof over Arthur Ashe stadium will be ready in time for the 2016 tournament and the new Grandstand will also be fully up and running. 

In addition, fans will notice a range of changes throughout the grounds, including more seating on the sides and ends of the field courts, an expanded food village, a new (slightly smaller) food court next to the new Grandstand stadium, elevated walkways between several of the outer courts on the southern edge of the site, wider walkways and paths, an oyster bar and twice as many restrooms.
