The Brooklyn Nets held off a late rally from the Cleveland Cavaliers to topple the reigning Eastern Conference Champions, 112-107, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday night.

LeBron James finished with 29 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds for the Cavs, but six different Nets scored in double digits, led by a career-high 22 points from Spencer Dinwiddie.

The New England Patriots rallied from a 14-0 first-half deficit to beat the New York Jets, 24-17, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. on Sunday afternoon.

The win moves the Patriots back to the top of the AFC East and gives quarterback Tom Brady the most regular-season wins (187) than any quarterback in NFL history.

72 Hours in Philadelphia: Eastern State Penitentiary

I visited Eastern State Penitentiary during a recent trip to Philadelphia. The prison is an eerily impressive structure of preserved ruins, a bare, cold stone structure built in a radial structure around a center point.

Opened in 1829, the building in northern Philly was abandoned in 1971. After almost 150 years of use, the prison now welcomes visitors, tourists and special groups. Some of the cell blocks are currently closed, but you can still walk through many of them to get a glimpse into the life of a convict in solitary confinement.

It's been a big week in Major League Soccer and for the New York Red Bulls with the unveiling of the new 2017 match ball, the release of the schedule and, today, the MLS SuperDraft.

The Red Bulls open on the road in Atlanta on Sunday, March 5 before returning back to Red Bull Arena for their home opener against Colorado on Saturday, March 11.

Key home games include welcoming New England on Saturday, May 27, DC United on Saturday, April 15 and Wednesday, Sept. 27, and NYCFC on Saturday, June 24 and Friday, Aug. 25.

Here are some of my favorite photos I took during the 2016 season.

72 Hours in Lisbon

In December, I took a side trip to Lisbon for three days over the Christmas holiday. It's a short, easy flight from London, and the weather is still pretty nice. It's impossible to explore the city properly in three days, of course, and if I had more time there, I would have loved to get out to other neighborhoods like Sintra, as well as spend more time in Lisbon itself.

I stayed in Alfama which is on the eastern edge of the city, and that gave me ample opportunities to explore some great streets and sites. Highlights included Castelo de S. Jorge, Se de Lisboa, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Belem Tower, Praça do Comércio and Carmo convent.

Philadelphia's Chris Pontius leads the Union against New York Red Bulls

Chris Pontius scored his 12th goal of the season and added an assist on Fabian Herbers' 15th-minute strike, but his Philadelphia Union fell to the New York Red Bulls, 3-2, at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., on Saturday evening.

The win catapulted the Red Bulls to the top of the Eastern Conference and left the Union in sixth place but still in the hunt for a playoff spot. The Union wrap their season with consecutive home games -- against Orlando City on Oct. 16 and then in a rematch with the Red Bulls in the regular-season finale on Oct. 23.

I wasn't originally scheduled to photograph this game, but I made a last-minute trip to watch Chris after missing him when he played NYCFC in June and when he came to New York as a member of DC United in 2015.

Chris spent seven seasons with DC United from 2009-15, including the 2011 season when he played alongside friend and current Red Bulls captain Dax McCarty, who scored the winning goal on Saturday.

In the second half, I sat behind the Red Bulls' goal, below the section of the stadium where Chris family and friends were sitting and below where the traveling Sons of Ben supporters' group were cheering. I figured that if he scored, he would run toward that corner of the pitch to celebrate.

After the match, he applauded the Union fans and climbed into the crowd where his girlfriend was. As a result, he was the last player back into the dressing room, but he still stopped to sign every single autograph and take selfies with the fans. It was very cool to see and I hope to see Chris in the playoffs.

MLS: New York Red Bulls destroy NYCFC 7-0

It was billed as a highlight of Rivalry Week, but the New York Red Bulls proved #NYisRED with a dominant 7-0 thrashing of host NYCFC at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

The match was one-sided from the very beginning, with Dax McCarty heading home from Sacha Kljestan's third-minute corner. A Bradley Wright-Phillips brace at the end of the first half sent the visitors into the interval with a 3-0 advantage, but the onslaught did;t stop there.

McCarty stooped low to head home another Kljestan set piece in the 51st minute before substitutes Alex Muyl (56), Gonzalo Veron (83) and Gideon Baah (89) wrapped up the victory.

The Red Bulls jumped into third place in the standings with the triumph, one point behind NYCFC and two points behind league-leading Philadelphia Union who have played two fewer games.

New York Red Bulls vs. Houston Dynamo

The New York Red Bulls rallied from behind to beat the visiting Houston Dynamo, 4-3, at Red Bull Arena on Saturday evening.

Sacha Kljestan opened the scoring for the hosts after 22 minutes, but Houston hit back behind a pair of Will Bruin goals shortly before half time. Red Bulls midfielder Mike Grella drew New York level shortly after the hour mark before Alex re-established the Dynamo lead two minutes later.

Felipe tied things at 3-3 with a curling shot from the edge of the penalty area on 77 minutes, and he sent the home fans into a frenzy when his 83rd-minute free kick crept into the top-right corner past the outstretched dive of Joe Willis.

New York City FC vs. Orlando

New York City FC fell to Orlando, 1-0, in a regular-season game at Yankee Stadium on Friday evening.

Cyle Larin's seventh-minute header proved this difference as Orlando won its first game of the season. The hosts dominated possession throughout, but failed to covert their chances as they were shut out for the first time this year.

The New York Red Bulls dropped its season-opener at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ, on Saturday, losing 2-0 to visiting Toronto FC. The Red Bulls raised the 2015 Supporters' Shield banner before the match, but fell to two late goals from Sebastian Giovinco and Marky Delgado.

Pics: Quinnipiac defeats Harvard in overtime at Rivalry on Ice

Derek Smith's goal two minutes and 55 seconds into overtime gave the top-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats a 5-4 victory over the Harvard Crimson in the annual Rivalry on Ice game at Madison Square Garden on Saturday evening.

The Bobcats seized the early advantage, scoring three goals in 36 seconds in the opening period. Alex Miner-Barron got the visitors on the board before K.J. Tiefenwerth and Sam Anas extended Quinnipiac's advantage to 3-0. A fourth goal by Travis St. Denis capped a frantic opening period for the No. 1 team in the nation.

Alexander Kerfoot got Harvard on the board midway through the second period, and Tyler Moy collected a power play goal off an assist from Desmond Bergin to halve the deficit. Ryan Donato cut the lead to one with a strike at the 17:43 mark before Colin Blackwell completed the comeback 10 minutes into the third.

With the score tied at 4-4, the game went to overtime, but it was Smith who sent the Bobcats home victorious when he scored off an assist from Tim Clifton and Scott Davidson.

Following the conclusion of the Quinnipiac-Harvard contest, Navy beat Army, 6-4, in a club exhibition match.

PICS: No. 10 Xavier outlasts St. John's at Carnesecca Arena

My first game of 2016 was some NCAA hoops as No. 10 Xavier came into Queens to face St. John's. The Red Storm cut Xavier's 12-point lead to as little as one point late in the second half, but the Musketeers pulled away for a 74-66 victory.

St. John's guard Federico Mussini went 5-for-8 from downtown as part of a 19-point night and teammate Ron Mvouika added 19 points and five rebounds in the loss.

Xavier's Myles Davis scored a team-high 19 points with four assists and three boards, while Trevon Bluiett recorded 18 points, four assists and three steals in the victory.

PICS: Construction continues on tennis stadia and grounds of US Open

Construction continues on the grounds of the US Open tennis championships in Flushing Meadows, Queens, in New York. The roof over Arthur Ashe stadium will be ready in time for the 2016 tournament and the new Grandstand will also be fully up and running.

In addition, fans will notice a range of changes throughout the grounds, including more seating on the sides and ends of the field courts, an expanded food village, a new (slightly smaller) food court next to the new Grandstand stadium, elevated walkways between several of the outer courts on the southern edge of the site, wider walkways and paths, an oyster bar and twice as many restrooms.

I went down to check out the progress on behalf of the USTA and USOpen.org. All photos are credited to Ashley Marshall/USTA.

New York Yankees land Starlin Castro; New York Mets trade Jon Niese

It was a busy day for New York's two baseball teams on Wednesday at the Winter Meetings in Nashville, Tenn. The Yankees acquired middle infielder Starlin Castro in a deal that sends right-hander Adam Warren and a player to be named later to the Chicago Cubs and the Mets brought in second baseman Neil Walker from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a straight-up deal for pitcher Jonathan Niese.

I shot Castro and Niese at Citi Field earlier this year when the Cubs came to town in June. Here are a couple photos of those two players from the Cubs' win that day.

Photos: Danny Jacobs defeats Peter Quillin to retain WBC Middleweight title

Billed as a battle of the borough where the winner took Brooklyn and the belt, Danny Jacobs defeated challenger Peter Quillin with an 85-second stoppage in their WBC Middleweight championship belt at the Barclays Center on Sunday.

Kid Chocolate Quillin (32-1-1), a neighborhood friend of Jacobs', landed just two punches in contrast to Jacobs (31-1, 28 knockouts) who landed 27 of 53 punches.

"I told him I love him," Jacobs said. "He's a brother of mine. Me and Peter Quillin go back to the Golden Gloves days. I have nothing but respect for him, his family -- but I knew it would be my night."

Said Quillin, "There's no one better to lose to than Danny Jacobs."

Player of the Year Laura Gomez headlines four Panthers on DII East Region First Team

A quartet of Adelphi Panthers who helped lead the women's soccer team to the NCAA Division II regional championship final have been named to the 2015 Division II Conference Commissioners Association East Region First Team.

Laura Gomez, Victoria Antonino, Taylor Groth and Taylor Salmon headlined a list of 13 student-athletes named to the First Team All-Region squad. Here are a couple images from the regional championship game against Bridgeport. All photos are Ashley Marshall/Adelphi University.

Gomez (19) earned Player of the Year honors after scoring 12 goals that ranked her first in the Northeast-10 Conference and 45th in the country.

Antonino (10) recorded five goals, including the double-overtime winner against Merrimack to send the Panthers to the NE-10 final, and two assists.

Groth (4) was named NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year and anchored a back line that allowed 0.6 goals per game.

Salmon (7) won the NE-10 Championship MVP award and recorded three goals and two assists from defense.

New York Red Bulls defeat rivals DC United in Eastern Conference Semifinals

A late strike from Bradley Wright-Phillips secured the New York Red Bulls' place in the Eastern Conference finals with a 1-0 win at home to rivals DC United on Sunday at Red Bull Arena. The injury-time strike gave the Red Bulls a 2-0 win on aggregate and they will now meet the winner of the Columbus Crew SC - Montreal Impact match in the Conference Championship.

2015 All-Star Cricket match at Citi Field

King of Spin Shane Warne turned back the clock to dismiss cricketing icons Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Vvs Laxman, and fellow Australian Ricky Ponting recorded an unbeaten 48 as Warne’s Warriors defeated Sachin’s Blasters by six wickets in front of a raucous crowd at the first Cricket All-Stars match in New York City on Saturday.

Leading a cast of global cricket legends, Warne and Tendulkar entertained almost 35,000 fans over three hours of entertaining cricket at Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets, in Queens.

Warne won the toss and chose to bowl first on a dry but overcast afternoon in New York’s biggest borough, taking three wickets for 20 runs in four overs of work.Andrew Symonds also claimed there wickets in two overs.

Blasters openers Virender Sehwag and Tendulkar scored 55 and 26 respectively, the former lashing six sixes and three fours from just 22 balls before getting bowled by Daniel Vettori. Sehwag’s work at the crease was the highlight of the Blasters’ innings, and the 140/8 score left the Warriors needing just seven runs an over as they chased down the modest total.

Openers Matthew Hayden and Jacques Kallis fell on consecutive balls — Hayden caught behind by Moin Khan off Shoaib Akhtar’s short delivery, Kallis run out by Muttiah Mutalitheran — but Ponting scored 48 runs off 38 balls to steady the ship.

Kumar Sangakkara was caught by Mahela Jayawardene on 41, but Jonty Rhodes scored an unbeaten 20 from 14 deliveries, steering the Warriors to victory with a reverse sweep that went for six.

Brooklyn Bolts defeat Florida BlackTips, win FXFL championship

The Brooklyn Bolts defeated the Florida BlackTips, 31-24, at MCU Park in Brooklyn to clinch the Bolts' second Fall Experimental Football League championship.

The game had everything including a blocked punt recovered for a safety, a pick-six on the first drive of the game, missed field goals, missed extra points, an ejected player reinstated one possession later and the ball from a kickoff going out of bounds being placed at the spot it went out.

Here are a couple shots from the game, which featured former first-round NFL quarterback Josh Freeman quarterbacking the Bolts.

Raul Mondesi could make history with Kansas City Royals in 2015 World Series

Raul Mondesi could make history this week if he appears in a World Series game for the Kansas City Royals.

Mondesi, just 20 years old, is looking to become the first player to make his Major League debut in the Fall Classic. He is yet to play a game above Double-A, but was added to the Royals' roster ahead of Game 1 on Tuesday.

I remember photographing Mondesi, the son of former big leaguer Raul Mondesi Sr., in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game held at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, N.J. on June 18, 2013, when he was a member of the Class A Lexington Legends.

Varsity golf semifinals tee off at Marine Park Golf Club

Tottenville advanced to the girls' varsity golf finals on Monday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Cardozo.

Marine Park features a long, straight par-five on the first hole, a back-to-front sloped green on the second hole and a long par-four on the dogleg right third. A trio of bunkers guard the green on the short 264-yard par four fourth while views of the Empire State Building greet golfers teeing off on the fifth, a 123-yard par three hole from the red tee.

A grip it and rip it drive from the tee on six is the best way to save par on that 341-yard par four, but more guile and tact is needed on the seventh, which features a narrow fairway and an uphill green. The par three eighth runs along the bank of the water hazard, while the ninth sees golfers hitting over the lake to hit the green in regulation.

This semifinal was played over nine holes.

New York Red Bulls beat Philadelphia Union, 4-1, in regular-season finale at Red Bull Arena

The New York Red Bulls ended their regular season finale at Red Bull Arena with a comfortable 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Union to clinch the Eastern Conference and guarantee themselves of a first or second seed in the Major League Soccer playoffs next month.

Mike Grella scored after seven seconds for the fastest goal in MLS history, Bradley Wright-Phillips added a second goal three minutes later and Grella made it 3-0 after 17 minutes. Kumar Lawrence scored his first MLS goal just before the break to extend the advantage to 4-0. Sebastien Le Toux scored for the Union on 55 minutes, but the Red Bulls coasted the rest of the way.

The Red Bulls are tied with FC Dallas in the Supporters' Shield race for the best regular-season record with one game remaining. New York travels to Chicago on Sunday while FC Dallas hosts San Jose.

New York University Baseball plays first home game in 41 years

New York University's baseball team played its first game in 41 years on Saturday.

The NYU Violets dropped a doubleheader to the Brandeis University Judges at MCU Park on Coney Island, the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Class A Short-Season affiliate of the New York Mets.

Center fielder Michael Vokulich was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base and third baseman Christian Bloom and catcher CJ Picerni each collected a pair of hits in the opener, a 4-2 defeat. Leadoff man and left fielder Adrian Spitz was 1-for-4 with two steals and both runs scored.

Chase Denison took the complete-game loss for the Violets, surrendering four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out four batters over seven innings. Denison's first pitch was the first thrown by an NYU player in a home game since 1973.
The Violets lost Game 2, 11-8, and were defeated, 3-1, in the series finale Sunday.

United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Baseball

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Mariners beat the Baruch Bearcats, 11-8, in a Landmark Conference game at MCU Park in Brooklyn, New York.

The spring is upon us and that mean's it's baseball season. While New York City's public parks and fields remain closed to baseball and softball teams, New York's college teams returned to action this week.

In my first game of the spring, the College of Mount Saint Vincent swept an NCAA D-III Skyline Conference doubleheader against Yeshiva.

Graphic design: 2015 Trenton Thunder schedule poster

I had a little extra time on my hands earlier this week, so I spent a few minutes putting together this poster. I had seen a similar college schedule poster and I wanted to know whether I had the skills to create something similar with images from my own portfolio.

I grabbed six different action shots from the handful of games I spent covering the Trenton Thunder and another one of the stadium, ARM & HAMMER Park. I found a couple additional images online (the Thunder, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram logos, for example) and created this composite.

Let me know your thoughts on the execution of the design and the overall appeal of the poster.

Spring Training is nearly here, so I'm going to post some of my favorite baseball photos from last years. I was fortunate enough to shoot a range of Minor League teams, from the Brooklyn Cyclones and Hudson Valley Renegades in the Class A short season New York-Penn League to the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs and Gwinnett Braves in the International League. In between, I saw South Atlantic teams such as the Lakewood Blue Claws and Double-A teams like the Trenton Thunder and Richmond Flying Squirrels.

Minor League Baseball is more than just see ball, hit ball. It's about young players honing their talent, families attending ballparks together and teams showcasing their creativity with near-seen-before promotions to make Minor League Baseball the best entertainment package in sport today.
